We’re thrilled to share some exciting news from the eLearning Journal: Our customer's platform "Kaspar Kompass" has been awarded the title of Best Knowledge App at the eLearning Awards 2025! This innovative learning and communication platform, developed for our amazing client Kaspar Schmauser, an innovative German restaurant chain, has won the hearts of the jury. In this article, the eLearning Journal dives into why the jury picked this incredible platform as the winner.

An informed, engaged team on the path to success

High turnover, shifting teams, and complex processes make it challenging for companies in the hospitality industry to build a strong corporate culture over time. Kaspar Schmauser has addressed these challenges with an innovative solution: the "Kaspar Kompass." In collaboration with Fellow Digitals, a digital platform was created that goes far beyond traditional training systems. It combines learning, communication, and collaboration into one cohesive digital ecosystem. From mandatory training and hygiene standards to interactive community features, the platform offers everything needed to maintain standards and strengthen team culture. At the same time, it enables knowledge to be shared flexibly, independently, and regardless of location.

The quick-paced, dynamic environment of the foodservice industry demands that teams operate efficiently, meet high-quality standards, and ensure customer satisfaction. But there’s another challenge: high employee turnover. New hires, temporary replacements, and training are common in the industry. These factors not only lead to higher training efforts but also make it harder to establish a consistent corporate culture.

For Kaspar Schmauser, a modern company committed to combining sustainable, plant-based nutrition with technological innovation, these elements are crucial. Here, not only high-quality food matters but also the people behind the success. Together with Fellow Digitals, they sought a solution that would modernize not only learning but also internal communication.

Learning Needs

The hospitality industry presents unique challenges for corporate learning concepts. Frequent new hires, diverse roles, and standards aimed at long-term simplification (but adaptable with feedback and everyday experience) require not only efficient onboarding but also continuous professional development.

At Kaspar Schmauser, a key need was to make knowledge more easily accessible in the daily work routine and provide it digitally, enabling faster communication of changes. Employees often need immediate answers to practical questions, such as how to operate the register, hygiene guidelines, or shift change procedures. At the same time, legal and company-specific standards must be communicated to ensure compliance with quality and safety regulations.

It also became clear that traditional onboarding alone was not enough to retain employees long-term. The high turnover in the industry made it necessary to develop a concept that not only imparts knowledge but also strengthens employee motivation and their connection to the company's values.

The project's target audience can be divided into two key groups: On one hand, the "Kaspar Kompass" is aimed at restaurant employees, including service and kitchen staff, shift leaders, and restaurant managers. This group needs direct access to job-relevant knowledge and mandatory training. On the other hand, business partners and franchisees also form an important audience. For them, the platform offers a transparent view of company standards, processes, and training procedures, ensuring adherence to high-quality requirements and enabling smooth integration of new locations.

Project Timeline

At the outset of the project, Kaspar Schmauser faced the challenge of finding a partner with both the technical expertise and flexibility to develop a platform that would meet the company's specific needs. This led to Fellow Digitals, whose platform in its beta stage provided a promising foundation. Through close collaboration, the platform was tailored to Kaspar Schmauser's requirements. This resulted in the creation of four key pillars that form the basis of the "Kaspar Kompass":

  • The Academy, offering mandatory training such as hygiene regulations, occupational safety, and onboarding content.

  • The "Bib," providing easy access to job-related documents like recipes, standards, and process descriptions.

  • The News section, which regularly informs employees about current developments within the company, creating transparency.

  • The Community, which fosters exchange between different locations and teams, strengthening team spirit.

The focus was on creating practical, concise learning content: the video courses were designed to convey the three main points of a topic, keeping the material clear and understandable. Additionally, the platform was optimized for mobile use, ensuring flexibility for employees.

A pilot phase with selected locations and employees was used to test the system and gather feedback. Based on these insights, adjustments were made before the platform was rolled out more widely.

The rollout took place in stages, accompanied by targeted communication measures to encourage employee acceptance. Short, engaging video clips shared via internal channels like WhatsApp and LinkedIn promoted the platform. A countdown timer and interactive content piqued teams' interest, making the launch feel like a shared experience. On the official launch day, all employees were registered on the platform and had direct access to a wealth of content.

Project Outcome

In collaboration with Fellow Digitals, the "Kaspar Kompass" became a central point for all employees, offering intuitive usability, flexible learning content, and innovative communication functions. A particular success of the platform is the efficient implementation of mandatory training, such as hygiene regulations, occupational safety, and onboarding processes. Interactive video courses and availability through both browsers and apps allow employees to access learning content anytime and from anywhere, boosting flexibility and efficiency. Progress is transparently documented, making it easier to comply with legal requirements. The platform also offers a digital knowledge library, providing frequently used resources such as recipe instructions, standards, and contact lists, significantly easing the workday.

In addition to successful knowledge transfer, the Kaspar Kompass also strengthens internal communication and team spirit. The News section keeps employees informed about company-wide developments, fostering transparency and connection. Integrated community features promote exchange between different locations and teams, making employees feel more connected.

With a 100% completion rate for mandatory training, the platform demonstrates impressive acceptance and effectiveness. A total of 106 registered users are actively using the platform, benefiting from 37 practical video courses that cover topics like hygiene regulations and occupational safety in a clear and concise manner.

The Kaspar Kompass is dynamically designed and grows in line with the company and its evolving needs. New locations and content can be seamlessly integrated, ensuring that the platform remains up-to-date and continues to keep pace with Kaspar Schmauser’s growth.

Moreover, the platform helps counter the typical turnover in the hospitality industry. Employees who feel well-informed and involved are happier and stay with the company longer. The combination of efficient onboarding, flexible learning, and internal networking has significantly improved employee satisfaction. This is reflected not only in the smoother integration of new team members but also in the stronger bond with existing staff.

Conclusion

The Kaspar Kompass represents a significant step forward in innovation for the hospitality industry, clearly demonstrating how digital technologies can be effectively used to optimize business processes, promote knowledge transfer, and sustainably strengthen employee retention. The platform combines learning, communication, and collaboration into a seamless system that meets the demands of a dynamic work environment while offering innovative solutions. This combination not only enables more efficient training and onboarding but also creates a closer connection between employees and the company culture. Notably, the Kaspar Kompass was designed not only with functionality in mind but also with a human touch.

In this way, Kaspar Schmauser is responding to key industry challenges while offering an innovative approach to securing long-term success. The Kaspar Kompass is not only a milestone in the history of Kaspar Schmauser but also an inspiration for other companies looking to fully leverage the potential of modern eLearning technologies. Against this backdrop, the jury is pleased to award the collaborative project of Fellow Digitals and Kaspar Schmauser with the eLearning AWARD 2025 in the category of "Learning Platform," focusing on "Knowledge App." Congratulations!
